Hi, I’m Margeret!

And Flora Mood is my little corner of the internet — a place where backyards become something you actually want to spend time in, and plants stop being intimidating and start feeling like home.

I’m the creator, writer, and plant lover behind Flora Mood. I’m based in California, and what started as a personal struggle with my own outdoor space has turned into a blog I’m genuinely proud of.

When I moved into my current home, the backyard was completely bare. Flat, exposed, not a single thing growing. I had this vision of a space with shade and greenery and some kind of structure to it — the kind of backyard where you actually want to sit outside with your morning coffee instead of just walking through. So I started buying plants. And then more plants. I built a small trellis, tried to grow climbing vines on it, and watched most of them struggle through their first summer without really understanding why.

Nothing was thriving the way I’d imagined. I didn’t know which plants could handle the California heat, or how much space a pergola actually needs, or whether my fence idea would block too much light from reaching the garden bed underneath. I spent a lot of time searching for answers and finding information that was either too technical to apply or too vague to be useful.

That gap — between the beautiful outdoor spaces I kept seeing and the practical knowledge needed to actually create them — is what Flora Mood is built to close. I started writing down everything I was learning as I went, and eventually that became the blog you’re reading now.

I Love Bringing Outdoor Spaces to Life

Flora Mood is where I share what I’ve learned about designing and caring for outdoor spaces — the kind of honest, practical guidance I wish I’d had when I started. Everything on this site comes from real experience: seasons of trial and error, plants that didn’t make it, structures that worked better than expected, and the slow satisfaction of watching a backyard transform over time.

I don’t have a landscaping degree. What I have is years of hands-on work in my own outdoor space — figuring out what grows, what holds up, what looks good and also functions — and a lot of careful reading and research along the way.

On Flora Mood, you’ll find ideas and guidance across five areas I care about most:

🏛️  Pergola — how to plan, build, and style a pergola that actually fits your space and the way you live in it

🌿  Trellis — choosing the right structure, the right plants, and getting climbing vines to do what you want

🪵  Fence — practical and beautiful fencing ideas that balance privacy, light, and visual interest

🌳  Backyard — the bigger picture: layout, design, seasonal planting, and turning a yard into a livable space

🪴  Plant Care — the straightforward guidance that helps plants actually thrive, from succulents to hydrangeas to bamboo

My approach is always about calm over complicated. Outdoor spaces don’t need to be perfect or high-maintenance to feel beautiful. I focus on ideas that are realistic for real people — not styled shoots or unlimited budgets, but genuine improvements that make a backyard feel more like the place you want to be.

A Little More About Me

Outside of Flora Mood, I’m someone who finds a lot of quiet pleasure in being near things that grow. Early mornings in the backyard — before the day gets busy — are when I do some of my clearest thinking. There’s something grounding about checking on plants, noticing what changed overnight, seeing which climbing vine finally reached the top of the trellis it’s been working toward for weeks.

Living in California means I get to garden year-round, which is both a gift and a constant experiment. The heat in summer changes everything. Which plants go dormant, which ones bolt, which ones surprise you by looking their best in August when everything else is parched. I’ve learned a lot about plant resilience just from paying attention through different seasons in the same space.

When I’m not writing for Flora Mood or working in the yard, you’ll find me:

☀️  Spending early mornings outside with coffee before the heat sets in — usually checking on something I planted recently

📐  Sketching out new layout ideas for the backyard on paper before committing to anything

🌱  Visiting local nurseries just to see what’s in season — I rarely leave empty-handed

📸  Taking far too many photos of how the light falls through the pergola at different times of day

📖  Reading about plant combinations, soil science, and garden design in a way that most people would find excessive

I also love hearing from readers — especially people who are just starting to work on their outdoor spaces and aren’t sure where to begin. Those questions are the ones I find most worth answering, because I remember being exactly there.

A Note on Transparency

Flora Mood is created for informational and inspirational purposes only. The ideas, plant care guidance, and outdoor design suggestions shared here are based on my personal experience and research. They are not a substitute for advice from a professional landscaper, horticulturist, or structural engineer — particularly for larger construction projects like pergola or fence installation.

For structural outdoor projects, I always recommend checking local building codes and, where appropriate, consulting a licensed professional.
